Semi frameless balustrades are used mostly where the fall height is under 1 metre, or as a fence or pool surround. It is possible to have balustrade without a top rail, but only using specific glass types that have interlayers that will meet BCA requirements, even in the case of breakage. The BCA stipulates that all balustrades must have a top rail in case of glass breakage, to leave a barrier to help prevent falls.
